What to Expect

Trying something new can be intimidating!  Let's walk through exactly what to expect in your free trial lesson, so you can feel confident that this is the right fit for you.

Before Our Lesson

Once you schedule your trial lesson, I will send you some general information up front for your review.  I believe in being open and honest from our very first conversation, so you can make the best decision for you and your student.  Make note of any specific questions you may have, and we can discuss them in our lesson time

Getting Acquainted

We will spend the first part of our lesson getting to know one another.  I will ask about your student's musical experience (no worries if the answer is none!) and what excites them about taking lessons.

Teaching Sample

We will spend some time having a mini lesson together, and your student will walk away having learned something new after our very first time together! This will also give you a chance to see my teaching style in action and help you determine if I will be a good fit as your teacher.

Getting Connected

We will meet virtually for your trial lesson.  I use Google Meet for video conferencing.  You do not need to have a Google account to access Meet, however please take a few minutes to test out the meeting link beforehand and make sure your connection is working properly.

Assessing Current Musical Ability

Music is a skill, and we all have some fluency in music that we gain just from everyday life.  Even if you have no formal training, I like to do a couple exercises to assess your comfort level with things like rhythm and ear training.  These will be fun and there are no wrong answers or expectations, so no pressure involved!

Next Steps

Lesson time always flies by, and in no time we'll be saying goodbye.  At the end of our time together I will share my studio policies and paperwork with you to review, as well as answer any final questions you may have.  If you feel that we are a good fit and you are interested in moving forward, then we will reserve your ongoing lesson day/time.  Once you send back the signed paperwork and the first month's lesson payment is made, then I will lock in your lesson time and it will be yours until you are ready to adjust it or end lessons.

What My Students Say

Kristin K.

"Shannon was able to impart her enthusiasm and love of playing the piano onto my son.  She listened to my son's ideas about what he wanted to learn next, and incorporated those into her lesson, all while still being sure to instruct him in the basic concepts. Her consistent positivity and encouragement were very apparent."
