10 Reasons To Fall in Love With Calligraphy This Spring

Have you been resisting the cute home decor and chalk-board lettering you see all around these days? Here are 10 reasons why you should hop on board the calligraphy trend and design (or diy) your own calligraphy decor this spring!

1. Calligraphy is personal and unique

I never make the same piece twice. I absolutely love custom projects, which I why I devote all my time and efforts to unique pieces for each of my clients rather than mass-producing a trendy project. Having something that you helped design, and that you know is one-of-a-kind is the perfect addition to your home.

2. Calligraphy isn't just for paper

If you think that calligraphy is just fancy writing on paper, then I have a great surprise for you! I've worked with all types of materials, from photo frames, to wooden signs, to glass and mirrors, and even tile coasters! Calligraphy is more versatile than you might think at first glance, and if you can dream it we can probably design it! (And I always love a good challenge, so if you think it's impossible let's chat first!)

3. You're supporting local art

You know what's cool? Supporting the arts in your community! That sounds like a cheesy tagline, but honestly artists like me can't survive without amazing patrons like you. Making the perfect piece of art for you is what we love doing most in the world, and we get our kicks from going out of our way to make sure you walk away happy. And it all starts with knowing we're here and valuing our skills, so thank you from the bottom of my heart!

4. There are many, many types of calligraphy scripts to fit any occasion

If you're looking for a formal certificate, Gothic or Italic may be your first choice. If you'd like a beautiful rendering of a favorite poem, Copperplate or Foundational may catch your eye. Spencerian is a beautiful choice for a love letter. If you like the modern look, Brush calligraphy is a perfect fit! Whatever the sentiment or occasion, there's a style of calligraphy to fit your needs!

5. Calligraphy is a wonderful and relaxing hobby

If you're the DIY type, you may be interested in learning calligraphy rather than purchasing a finished piece. This is a great hobby to take up, and can be very meditative and relaxing. Many of my students tell me how they love coming home after a long day, turning on some soft music, and practicing their calligraphy. And just like any art form, it's a great way to exercise your creative muscles!

6. A finished calligraphy piece can make the perfect gift

Remember what I said about calligraphy being personal and completely unique? It makes the perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for loved one! How about a lettered recipe book of family recipes? Or a piece of art designed around a quote from their favorite book? The possibilities are endless.

7. Calligraphy is a tradition dating back thousands of years

And you're helping to keep this beautiful art form alive. Way to go! In all seriousness, interest in handwriting is dwindling in the age of computers. We calligraphers love sharing our knowledge with others, whether that's in designing a piece of art or teaching the craft, and thereby continuing the tradition and furthering the art.

8. Hand-addressed envelopes can make every guest feel special, no matter the occasion

Hiring a calligraphy to address envelopes isn't just for weddings. Anniversary parties, milestone birthdays, bar/bat mitzvahs....any special occasion calls for special invitations. Send hand-lettered invitations, and I guarantee your guests will comment about the special touch!

9. Calligraphy can add that special touch to your special day

You may not notice that it's missing, but you'll definitely notice when it's there. Whether it's menus, signage, escort cards, or a table seating list, there are a hundred different ways to add hand-lettering into your special day for that added touch of elegance. 10. Calligraphy can memorialize special moments in your life

From wedding vows to that favorite saying your grandfather used all the time, calligraphy can immortalize the most special words in your life. Record forever your baby's birth stats, or your family's guiding bible verse. Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but there are some words in life that are etched on your heart forever.
