"Music Can Change the World." -- Beethoven
I am a classically trained flutist, and have experience teaching flute, piano, and guitar to all ages.
I have been playing flute since I was 11 years old, and hold a BA in Music. I have experience performing with chamber groups, orchestras, wind bands, flute choirs, and pit orchestras (musical theater), and I've been teaching privately on and off for the past 9 years. I co-directed a 25+ member flute choir and served as principal flutist for the Castle Rock Orchestra before leaving Denver to move back to the Midwest in 2018.
I believe that performing is a crucial piece of being a great teacher, so in addition to teaching lessons I devote time to performing with a variety of groups around the community. I currently play piccolo with the Bethel Community Orchestra.
Kristen K., 2018:
"Shannon is able to impart her enthusiasm and love of playing onto my son. She listened to [his] ideas about what he wanted to learn next, and incorporated those into her lesson, all while still being sure to instruct him in the basic concepts....Her consistent positivity and encouragement were very apparent.
Shannon possesses the wonderful combination of musical talent, patience, and the ability to clearly communicate her goals to children. I have taught fifth grade for 25 years, and Shannon stands out to me as a strong and caring teacher."
—-What to Expect—-
I don’t subscribe to the "one-method-fits-all” style, but rather take time to learn about what excites each student about learning music, and tailor our lessons to make sure everyone has a positive and engaging time of learning. My biggest goal as a teacher is to encourage a continuing passion for music in my students, while teaching a solid foundation of skills and concepts to continually improve each student's musical abilities.
With so many activities to choose from, and increasing pressure to "do it all", students today have less and less time for things that they aren't passionate about. That's why I strive never to let lessons become a chore, and work hard to keep each student engaged and excited as we move through new concepts and material.
Michele S., 2015:
"Shannon is an amazing guitar instructor. She's incredibly knowledgeable and presents material in logical components, and in a way that is understandable, even for a complete novice like myself.
Personal and encouraging, I highly recommend Shannon as a music instructor for both beginners and more advanced students alike. She thoroughly knows her stuff, and makes learning fun!"
Carly A, 2016:
"Taking lessons with Shannon has been a great experience! I had never played guitar, and wanted to learn to accompany myself when I sing. Shannon is very patient, and her thorough teaching style makes remember chords much easier than I thought it would be!"
The bottom line is: If you’re looking for an easy-going and encouraging teacher who will get to know your interests and goals, and who will work with you to learn a new instrument or to improve your flute technique, than I am a great fit for you!
